Time Management: The Hourglass Technique

I know all too well how hard it is to start something. Besides the fear that usually comes when we try something new, it seems like we always never have enough time to really pursue what matters to us the most. But if you really think about it, in an hours time without distractions, you can accomplish a lot.

We Are What We Repeatedly Do

Let's consider the math. If you were to only work 1 hour a day on your goals, every single day for a year, that would be 365 hours a year.

What could you accomplish with 365 hours?

I don't know about you, but for such a small commitment, in 365 hours I think I could accomplish a lot!

Mastering Your Time

The hardest part about working on your goals is we never seem to have enough time.

One solution I have found extremely beneficial is what I like to call the Hourglass Technique.

The Hourglass Technique

This hourglass technique is actually quite simple.

Go to any home goods store such as TJ Max, Wal-Mart or any cooking store and you'll be able to find a sand hourglass usually used to measure cooking time.

Using this same hourglass allows you to measure your time committed to your goals as well.

Once you start working on your goals, turn the hourglass over and allow the sand to start filtering to the other side of the hourglass.

During this time, be sure to stay focused on the tasks that you have planned that will allow you to progress towards your goals

Once the sand has moved to the other side of the hourglass, congratulations!

You've spent an hour working towards your goals and can now celebrate your progress.

Once you start building momentum, start seeing how many hours you can do in a row, as it becomes contagious, turning over the hourglass over and over and dedicating more time to making your goals a reality.

Getting Started With The Hourglass Technique

I know personally, sometimes when you first start working on your goals it can be tempting to get distracted visiting other websites and social media, especially if the tasks you are working on are online.

The best way to eliminate these distractions during your hour is by installing a website blocker, here is a list of my favorite website blockers.

When you visit certain websites during your hour you won't be able to access them. Once your hour is up, you'll be able to access these websites once again.

If you see staying focused a problem, as I did, try installing one of these programs on your computer or phone.

By installing a website blocker you'll find yourself a lot more focused and will be getting the tasks you need for your goals completed in record time.
