The Solution To

Plan Your Day For Success

Written on December 29, 2019 • 3 Minute Read • Comments

If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say they don't have enough time to pursue their dreams, I'd be a millionaire by now. The problem with this thinking is we all have the same amount of time, it's the lack of planning and boundaries that really holds us back.

Stop Living In Reaction To What Life Throws At You

If you take a look at most people's lives you will quickly see that most people live in reaction to what happens in their life. Most people know that they need to work 9-5 but outside those hours there really isn't a plan or schedule of attack for how to handle the hours outside of work.

What happens next is only obvious, we either spend our night binging Netflix, scanning our social media feeds or watching sports. A mind left to chance is a disaster waiting to happen.

Awareness Brings Change

A couple years ago I started using the app Mint. Mint is a free tool that allows you to pull in your financial accounts into one area and set a budget. When you plug in your debit card, the app then pulls in every transaction and categorizes them.

What was shocking to me was when I saw the amount of money I was spending on food and more importantly coffee. What I didn't think was a big deal, $4.63 here and $3.85 there, added up really quick each month.

Needless to say, I changed my habits of purchasing coffee.

A quick way to do this in your life and see where you spend your time is by using Google Calendar. You can create a new calendar and title it Time Management Awareness. From there for the next month, I want you to start tracking where you spend your time, you can color code the events on the calendar; blue for work, green for the gym, red for Netflix, etc.

At the end of the month, look back on the calendar in month view and you will quickly see you have a lot of extra time, you are just using your time the wrong way.

Once you reach a decent level of professional success, lack of opportunity won't kill you. It's drowning in "kinda cool" commitments that will sink the ship.

Don't Major In Minor Things

The secret to finding more time is by looking at your life and seeing what challenges are assigned to you and whether those tasks were assigned to you or you are doing them as a favor for someone else as a means to get someone to like you.

Take, for instance, your email inbox is a to-do list to which anyone in the world can assign you a task, make sure you aren't becoming a person who majors in minor things.

The way you decide to do things should be done by asking yourself two questions every time, "1) Is what I am about to do, going to be something I absolutely enjoy doing and 2) can I give the person I am helping more value than they are asking for?"

If you can say yes to both of these questions then go ahead and move forward. But if you answer no to either question, you should politely say no and leave the task to someone else who will enjoy it and do a better job than you would.

Batching Your Work

Once you've actually realized you have a lot more time than you originally thought, you then can learn how to batch your work into groups. By batching your work, you will be able to get the same results but get them by doing fewer tasks.
