Who You Need To Become

You Have To Become The Person Able To Achieve The Goal You Set

Written on December 29, 2019 • 4 Minute Read • Comments

When you are setting out to achieve something you have never done before, in order to achieve that goal, you are going to have to become someone you've never been before. You may need to learn new skills, change habits or even change where you work or the types of people you engage with. Who do you need to become in order to achieve your biggest goals?

Why Does This Goal Matter

The first question I always ask people when it comes to goal setting is why does this goal matter to you in the first place? Before you decide to change the way you live your entire life, you want to make sure the journey is worth it. Some questions to ask yourself include:

  • Why am I doing this?
  • Am I doing this because I'm good at it?
  • Am I doing this because I think it is cool or trendy
  • Am I doing this because of fame or money?
  • Am I doing this because I'm passionate about it?

Once you have the right answers and still want to move forward the next steps are a bit easier to handle.

Who Do I Need To Become

Albert Einstein famously quoted the definition of insanity, "Is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." But often times we find in our lives doing the same thing. We want to do more, become more, but then wonder why it's not happening. We then complain that the world isn't fair, but in order to get more, you need to become more. Another Einstein to reflect on in this situation is, "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value."

Become Insanely Valuable

When we add value to our lives, we are able to attract bigger opportunities into our lives. If we want to achieve bigger goals, we need to become someone who is insanely valuable. The way we create this value in our lives is reflected in:

  • The education we have
  • The different experiences we have had
  • The types of books we read
  • The types of inspiring videos we watch
  • Engaging with people outside our inner circle
  • Taking online courses and getting certificates
  • Getting together with a mentor or advisor

By increasing the value of your life, you will be able to accomplish more. The best rule of thumb is to become a lifetime learner and always remember everyone you meet has the ability to teach you at least one thing you probably have never learned or known before, engage with as many people as you can.

Change Who You Are To Become Who You Will Be

After you've increased your value and learned new things, practically speaking, in order to achieve your specific goals you now need to reflect on your life and understand what is working for you and what is working against you in regards to your new goals.

A lot of times the habits that brought us to where we are now, won't be the same habits that take us to where we want to go. We need to search our life and see what habits we currently are doing that are bringing us closers to our new goals, we may need to create new habits and routines to accelerate our progress and often times we will need to evaluate and stop doing certain habits that are holding us back.

Saving An Emergency Fund

Dave Ramsey is always helping people save and prepare for their futures. He often times talks about an emergency fund that people should setup in the case they lose their jobs or something else unforeseen happens in their lives.

The problem though, is if you have a habit of spending any excess money in your bank account, you must first stop the habit of overspending and introduce a new habit of putting back a certain percentage of your paycheck each pay period into a savings account. Often times, the plan is very simple, it's changing a bad habit that is the hard part. In order to save and reach your financial goal, you need to change and become someone better.

Remember There Is A Cost To Everything We Do

The best advice I can give to you as you move forward with your goals and becoming a better version of yourself packed with even greater value, is to remember that whatever you do, there will always be a cost. When you are setting goals and becoming more, there may not be a tangible financial cost to you bettering yourself but there might be indirect changes that occur in your life.

A lot of times as we grow, sometimes the people we normally engaged with will fall off because they aren't going in the same direction as we are and lose interest in the things we are doing in our lives. This doesn't mean you are doing the wrong things, it just means the journey you are taking isn't for everyone. Just remember to evaluate the costs and then compare them to the rewards. Anything worth doing will always outweigh the costs.
