Whether your goal is lose weight or build muscle, for both goals you must first understand how many calories your body use each day and then depending on your goal increase or decrease that number slightly.

How To Calculate Calories For Your Goals

In order to gain weight, you would want to add 300-500 calories and to lose weight you would want to subtract 300-500 calories

If you eat too many calories when you are trying to bulk you'll gain weight too quickly and the excess calories will be stored as fat.

Similarly, if you are trying to lose weight and don't eat enough, your body will go into protection mode and reduce your metabolism to preserve energy and you'll stall out your weight loss progress.
